General civil law

General civil law regulates legal relationships between private individuals and forms the core of private law. It includes basic regulations on persons, property, legal transactions and obligations. It focuses on principles such as freedom of contract, protection of property and the protection of fair business dealings. The aim is to resolve legal conflicts between equal parties, to avert these as far as possible by drafting contracts before they arise and to enable a fair balancing of interests. General civil law is the basis for special areas such as family, inheritance and tenancy law.
